  1. Can any one remember the names of the red, blue, yellow & greeen ‘houses’ at Cleveland school. Rosedale? HIghcliffe? Then I’m lost!????? Sheila Burnham (nee Morgan, attended 1963- 1972).

    • I think they were called Green – Stoneyridge, Red – Roseberry and Blue – Highcliff. I can’t remember name for yellow. I think they were all names of hills/landscape eg. Roseberry after Roseberry topping.

      • Hello Janette < I remember you very well. We were in the same class. I still see Janet Twizell nee Hall & Kate Pearson.
How the years have flown by. I always felt it was a disaster to demolish Woodside Hall. These days it would be converted into stylish apartments.
The 1970’s flat roofed building is an abomination!! Sheila Burnham nee Morgan.

        • Were you in the Eaglescliffe Guides with the wonderful Misses Reed Brown at Copsewood, Eaglescliffe Sheila? I was house captain of Stoneyridge but only be default as I was so non sporty!!

          • Hello Kay, yes I was very much involved with Jackie & Daphne Brown & enjoyed many many years of guiding with them. I still see them both from time to time when ‘Im in the north. I now live in Cheshire.

    • There’s a comment just come up on a Google website, Stockton archive. I was in Highcliffe, blue.
Attended 1964 till 1971. Maiden name Rhind. Still in touch with Gill Stafford and Bryonie Seaton Sykes. Had great times at Cleveland under Miss Chalmers.
Is there a way to keep in touch.
Would love catch up. Thank you.

  2. I was at Cleveland School from 1958 – 1965 and again from 1968 to 1970. Mrs Onions taught me French and Miss Chalmers was headmistress during my first stint there. My father told me that Woodside Hall was requisitioned by the army during WW2 and Miss Chalmers pestered the life out of them after the war to get her property back so that she could run the school there. I loved the building and still think about the wonderful gardens. Still feel guilty about illicit trips to Dead Man’s Cave.

    • Hi Sue. I was in your class at Cleveland School and I remember you leaving to go to Harrogate Ladies (I think). We were really pleased when you returned. ICI was seconded to Woodside Hall during the war and if you remember their office numbers were still on some of the classroom doors. Have you been back to look at the old grounds. Nothing like we played in. I keep in touch with Judith Davies but no one else. I am a member of the Old Girls. I now live near Harrogate I would be pleased to hear from you. Janette West (Smith).

  3. As far as I know Miss Hawes was and maybe still is living in Sidmouth in Devon. My mother Mrs Williams who taught Domestic Science at Cleveland for many years used to get a Christmas card from her. Since my mother has been suffering from Alzheimer’s and now lives in a care home she has lost touch with a lot of her old colleagues. June Beasley. Was Williams

    • I’m afraid to say that my Great Aunt, Miss Hawes is no longer with us as she passed away last year. It is lovely to read these comments about her.

  4. Amazing to see this on the site. I think that the girl sitting in the front row – second on the left is Elizabeth ‘eggy’ Eglin. I was at Cleveland School arond this time and remember Miss Hawes very well. Does anyone know if she is still around? She gave up on my appalling mathematics ability!! I adored that school and its grounds, but it was always freezing cold in the winter and roasting hot in front of the glass windows in our French Lessons – was it Mrs Houghton and Mrs Onions that taught the french?? Happy memories

  5. 1st row left to right: ?, Penny?, Carol Rowlings. Mary Webb, Miss Hawes, Carol Pillar, Carolyn Brown, ?, ?. 2nd row left to right: Kathleen Husband, Christine Todd, Elizabeth, Jane Stirling, Glenis Todd, ?, Heather Marshall, ?, ?, Francis Fairless, ?.
