St Johns Church, Alma Street

These photos were taken in 1935 & are of the interior of St John’s Church on Alma Street which was demolished in the 1960’s. The handwritten inscription on the back of the photo of the statue indicates that this was in the south aisle. There are no inscriptions on the other photos other than to say which Church it is & the date. Hume House, the multi storey block of flats, is located in the approximate area where the church was located. Courtesy of John Corney.

  1. I was confirmed in this church in 1974 – shortly before it closed. I remember lovely Mrs Bott’s funeral taking place in Stockton Parish Church in about 1977, just before I left for university. Mr Bob Crake was still around and was the MC in the new St John’s Church until he died in about 1983, I think. I attended the Parish Church for a while but found it far too Protestant – I missed the incense and I remember getting a telling off from the vicar when I defected to the new St John’s Church! Happy memories.

  2. I attended the church for some years in the late 1950s and 60s when father Stevens was vicar. I sang in the choir and remembered the Craig family amongst others. Bob was an undertaker and a pillar of the community I sang in the choir when I was 11 or so for some years practicing on Wednesday night. I also taught Sunday school for a while going on to become a secondary head teacher as a result of the inspiration it gave me good times!

    • Hello,
I think the undertaker was Bob Crake, of” Crake & Mallon”.
Mr Maughan was the choirmaster whilst I was there, and remember a Father Waker.

  3. I think this is St John the Baptist church ,my grandparents and my parents were married in this church and I was baptised here. The church would have stood a little further from where the flats are now.

  4. Thank you so much for publishing these photos. I was devastated when I returned to Stockton in the 70s and found that so much had been demolished. I attended St. John’s from the age of 9 until I was married there in 1963 by Father Alec Stephens. The church and the Youth Club are all part of my memories and to have the photos is a real pleasure. Each time I return something else has gone,
St James was also demolished. That was where my parents were married and where I was baptised. And the last straw for me was when they demolished St. James Church Hall at Tilery Rec. My mum taught Sunday school there and I met my husband there.

  5. I seem to remember that this was a Temple Moore church. The ceiling in the apse was a starry sky. My parents were married here.
