St Bedes Football Team 1971/72

This was a team assembled under the guidance of manager/coach Mick Lawler, a well know figure and metalwork teacher at St Bedes. The team competed in the Teesside & Cleveland Under 18 League 1971/72 along side other teams which included Middlesbrough Juniors, Hartlepool Juniors, South Bank etc. During this season the team won three trophies namely: North Riding Minor Cup, The Bradburn Bowl and the South East Durham Divisional Cup and finished in a respectable position in the league. 1. Who played in the 1973 cup final played at Victoria park against a team called Stockton Grange Estate?

  2. Great days, it was my favourite time for playing football. I can remember you playing in goal Phil, a great loss in the outfield but what a star between the sticks. Hope you are still fit and well.

  3. I notice the officials in the match programme are Dave Bodley who was a well known Northern League referee & Football League linesman, now a North Riding F.A.Official, and the late Freddie Bond who was also on the Football League linemens list, he worked at ASDA Portrack.

  4. Barry Overton in the photo was a YTS lad at Middlesbrough FC, he is the younger brother of Derek Overton the President of the Stockton Sunday League.

  5. I watched this team play Billingham Synthonia Juniors on the pitches outside the stadium. Steve Bromfield was hurt in a clash of heads, I took him to the old Stockton & Thornaby Hospital where he was treated for severe concussion. These pitches at Billingham were the old stamping ground of Phil Marshall who played for I.C.I Cassell Works in the Teesside League with his brother Dave, Keith Lamb(Middlesbrough FC Chief Executive)Stuart White & Tony Canty who all served the team well.

  6. This brings back some lovely memories of some great lads and some excellent footballers. Joe Harvey went mad at his youth side being beaten by us, but he did sign Colin Shepherd.

    • Michael Lawler also played inside forward in the Stockton & District League for the Knights of St Columbus in the early 60s.

  7. I remember Phil going in goal, especially in the S.E.DIV. final. It was at Trimdon, I remember talking to the ref, at the presentation after the match, he said “I dont think you were supposed to win here” scary!! Great to hear from you, hope more reply.

  8. I was the manager of the mile house football team in the mid to late 70s. I recognise a lot of the names here who played for the mile house at that time. Paul Etherington, Steve Bromfield, Colin Elgie, Steve Young – and good players they were too.

  9. Stevie Bromfield later played for Billingham Synthonia & South Bank in the Northern League but unfortunately, while living in Cumbria, he had a freak accident on his moped on the way to work & lost a leg under the knee. Bernie Daly is from a footballing family along with older brothers Keith & Vince.

  10. No I cannot recall you going in goal Phil. Still, with a defence like we had, don’t think you would’ve had to have made a save!!!! Good times eh!!

  11. I remember the Newcastle trip well.I dont know if Paul remembers Martin Smith quitting and I went in goal for the South East div. final and the Bradburn final which we won 5-0 at Dormans. I see Lenny quite a lot when I go offshore. I believe Stevie Bromfield lives in Oz now.

  12. Four of the team – myself, Bernie Daley, Steve Bromfield and Paul Dent represented the league in a one off inter league game at South Bank AFC ground beating our opponents Teesside Youth Organisations League 3-2. At the end of the season as a reward for our achievements Mick Lawler arranged a game against Newcastle Juniors up at Newcastle who we beat in front of the then Newcastle Manager Joe Harvey we then went to St James Park to watch Newcastle play Arsenal. Back Row left to right: Paul Dent, Colin Elgie, Martin Smith, Barry Overton, Mick Hobday, Bernie Daley(Capt), Paul Latham: Front Row left to right: Trevor Moody, Steve Bromfield, Phil Marshall, Steve Young, Paul Etherington. Not in Picture: Lenny Youdale & Mick Lawler. Any memories boys would love to hear them…
