St Bedes Intermediate Football team

St Bedes Intermediate team. Picture includes my brother Nicolas,  Jimmy Speight, Brian Doyle,  Gus Mcgarvey, Bryan Layden,  Bernie Daly,   Phil Spacey,  Paul O’Connor,  Peter Connor,  Phil Marshall,  Jamie Richardson,  Mick Jennings. ? Mulgrew and Jamie Nugent.  This team were runners up in the league and Salter cup 1965/6 .I seem to think Kev Hollifield is missing from this shot as he broke his leg on the Ropner playing fields against our main rivals Richard Hind who went on to win both trophy’s that year with Eric Young and Stevie Bromfield in their team.  Photograph courtesy of Phil Marshall

  1. Martin Mulgrew is the younger brother of Kevin who played for Whitby Town the season after they played in the 1965 F.A.Amateur Cup Final, before emigrating to New Zealand. Phil Marshall played in the Teesside League for I.C.I.Cassel Works alongside his brother Dave who was a good centre-back at 5′-7”,also Keith Lamb of the Boro,Tony Canty & Stuart White.

  2. Eric Young played for Durham and England Schoolboys but went to Man Utd but did not get into the first team before moving onto to Darlington. Stevie Bromfield was a goalscoring inside forward who played in the Northern League for Billingham Synthonia and South Bank, he played junior football for St Bedes alongside Bernie Daly and Phil Marshall in this photo.

  3. The name missing is Martin Mulgrew. I watched the game when Kev Hollifield broke his leg. He crashed into Stevie Bromfield who was goalkeeper for Richard Hind.
