Yarm High Street c1970

A view of the east side of Yarm High Street looking north, showing Presto’s supermarket with the Kenton Ox in the background…late 60s early 70s, judging by the sheepskin coat!

  1. My parents owned The International restaurant above Presto’s in the 1970’s! We lived down Valley Drive at the time! 🥰

  2. I well remember the Ketton Ox wasn’t the landlord Sam Kernow. The Victoria garage , The keys , we used to look forward over Christmas to watching West Street perform there playing lots of the Cream music. Alan Beckworth in the green tree. And all the cobbles being reset in concrete about this time… good days

  3. The garage to the left of the picture was owned by the lodge family for many years and was the roots main dealer, it was then sold on to a hartlepool firm called Northern Autoport. Eventually it was then sold off and the supermarket was extended taking over the site. A friend of mine still lives local, Mr Nigel Lodge who’s father owned the business.

  4. The premises next to `Presto’s supermarket in a state of demolition, was the original Victoria Garage which had a team of motor mechanics and sold used cars, as well as being the town centre petrol station (pumps still visible). This being of course, when technically Yarm was on the main A19 road to Sunderland and all points north. Presto acquired these adjacent premises, and the site was redeveloped as a larger supermarket which is now operated by Sainsbury’s
