    • There were a few hundred branches of Martin’s Bank. It began as a London private bank then acquired by the Bank of Liverpool. It took the Martin’s name. I had my 1st bank account at Martin’s. One of the cashiers in the Stockton branch was Herbert Whitley who played scrum half for England in the 1930’s. Martin’s was acquired by Barclay’s in 1969.

  1. This tram is the forerunner of the famous ‘O’ bus. My favourite bus and ride, I can still recall just about all the -‘O’- stops it made, starting from North Ormesby Market place to North Ormesby rail crossing, Corporation Road corner, Middlesbrough Town Hall, Middlesbrough Infirmary & Cannon Street, the Church in Newport Road, Parliament Road with the Corporation bus sheds nearby, Newport Bridge, then the Blind School, Cleveland Park Dog track, the Council tip and incinerator, the Erimus and Stockton Racecourse, Harewood Arms Thornaby, Mandale Road and Five Lamps, then Thornaby Station, Bridge Road & dole office, Parliament Street, Stockton, The Odeon / Yarm Lane, Stockton, Stockton Town Hall & Dovecot Street, The Globe, Hills Joinery works, Stockton dog track in Tilery, Norton Road, then Norton Cinema (laundry works next door) The White Swan ‘k/as Mucky Duck’ Norton, Norton Green, turn round and stop outside Blackwells the Butchers terminus stop, and return to North Ormesby following the same route.
