St Johns School c1953

t12928A photograph c1953 of St Johns School, Stockton. My cousin, Judith Egan is on the front row, second from the left and John Sudlow is on the middle row, fifth from the left. I recognise the teacher, Mrs Wright as she taught me a couple of years later. Can anyone name the other children in the photograph?

  1. Hi St John’s fellow ex-pupils! I can add a few names to the photo: Susan Henderson front right end, Eileen Nugent front 3rd from right, Joan Wright (Mrs Wright’s daughter) front 7th from right. Avril Kay (lived on Daventry Avenue), but I can’t recognise her photo.Other names – Olwen Amos, Frank Bryan, Douglas Reed?
I can’t recognise myself – possibly next to Linda Sayer -looks a bit like ginger hair? Or maybe I hadn’t caught up with the class by then. I started school late in Mrs Atkinson’s, then went to Mrs Wright’s and later progressed to Miss Cook’s (who also ran the Brownies).
My sister Elizabeth was one class up with Jean Hanrahan, Joan Nash..My little brother Stephen joined the school some time later. St John’s was a great start to school life.
    – Ann Evans (now Story) from out in the sticks at Bishopton.

  2. I think I started St Johns in 1950/51, I can remember Mr Price the headmaster he always called me Nita, Mrs Evans, Mrs Atkinson and Mr Fordy , I was off school the day the roof blew off but my 2 younger brothers were there and I don’t think my mother believed them when they came home. We lived in Eaglescliffe.

  3. I also was lucky to attend St. Johns from 1953- 1960 and have many happy memories of the above mentioned teachers. A very vivid memory was when as a five year old and in Mrs. Atkinson`s reception class I arrived at school on the bus from Norton to see the sight of the school roof blown off. I was very sorry to miss the anniversary as unfortunately I hadn`t heard anything about it. Does anyone know if it possible to visit and have a look around the old school?

  4. It has been many a year but I think Top Row 1st left may be Peter Spence, though am less sure that same row 5th right is Malcolm Ellis. The names Eileen Nugent, Avril Smith and Joan Wright come to mind, though I cannot put faces to them. The names Mrs Atkinson, Miss Felgate (in whose class I never was), Mrs Evans, Mrs Ward and Mr Ogden I also recollect, though cannot recall their order.

    • Well done Ian Hatfield (didn’t you get the nickname “hatrack” at Richard Hind?), it is Peter Spence on the top row 1st left and like you I’m not sure about Malcolm Ellis, which is strange as he and I were “best friends” through St Johns and onto Richard Hind. The order of teachers in the juniors was, Mrs Ward, (who we met at the reunion) Mrs Evans, Mr Ogden and then Mr Fordy. Finally to Karen Harbron, when we went to the reunion, Pat Beard (Pattison) and I had a look around the “old school”. We simply went to reception and explained that we were ex-pupils , it was astonishingly familiar although the hall seemed much smaller than I remember, I guess I’m bigger than I was then!

  5. Hello Glenn, we met a couple of years ago at the St John’s anniversary, when we talked to Mrs. Ward and then visited the original St Johns school.
I can certainly add one more name to this picture me! (Paul Butler 1952 to 1959) middle row third from the right.
Also, is that Linda Sayer in the middle of the middle row, Geoffrey(?) Gray 4th from the right top row, Ian Hatfield 6th from right top row, David Bingham 2nd from right top row..?
There are quite a few almost familiar faces, but after 60 years.!

    • Well thank you Paul Butler for having such a good memory… I thought I recognised my big brother’s face, him standing there so angelic and then you confirmed it… Ian Hatfield. I must tell him!

  6. i was lucky to go to this wonderful school from 1948-1954 and I still have great memories of the headmaster, Mister Price who taught me some great values, of all the teachers and the pupils some of whom I am still in touch with, I’m afraid I don’t recognise any pupils on this photo but I would love to see one from my year, I had a couple but lost them when my old computer crashed. That taught me to back up my files.
