  1. I was landlady of the Earl of Stockton March 1993- June 1994 with my late husband Maxwell Turner. He was an area manager for Camerons when the Fiesta opposite started up in the 60s. I live in Cyprus now and it was nice to see this photo ( I have one similar taken in ’93)

    • Just read your comment from 2013! Are you related to the Turners who lived at 30 West Row in 1891 and then at 12 Wyndham Street in Stockton in 1901?

  2. My mother was a cleaner here along with a lady Called Lillian? back when it was the Newlands Hotel back early 80s

  3. The building was opened around about 1965/66 it was built by Camerons brewery who had the beer in the Fiesta and the brewery had hoped that the star who appeared on the Fiesta would stay at the hotel and yes it did open as the Newlands hotel.
As you walked up to it the public bar was on the right and the hotel and lounge entrance was on the left it also had a restaurant downstairs.

  4. Yes, I remember going in this pub when it was the Newlands back in 1978/79 and always thought of it as being quite ‘posh’.

  5. Hi, just wondered if the person who put the photo on Picture Stockton is the same Martin Stainsby who was a racing cyclist. The same as me back in the 1970s.

  6. I have to ask, as the number does not convey anything to me in terms of its position perhaps you could suggest what landmarks or other roads where near and secondly how long did it last, what was the date of construction? Thanks

    • The Pub was converted from a residence to a pub about 1970. It was called then The Newlands. Can’t remember now whether the 1st Landlord was a local man who was brought up in that area or it was one of the 5 Smith Brothers singers. But I know that either was 1st or 2nd at the Newlands. Don’t know of the date of change of name to the Lord Stockton.

      • Probably in the early 1990’s or 1994, that The Newlands changed it’s name to The Earl of Stockton and funny enough, I think, it was called The Arches at one time in the 1990’s. Me and my mate, used to start the Norton pub crawl from the Newlands, in 1975 and we would drink in the cellar bar. Happy days.

    • To all of you who replied, thank you I did wonder if it was the Newlands but the brickwork seemed to be in superb condition so I wasn’t sure!
