Billingham Press Ltd was established in 1942 by Mr H Dodds. The company moved to bigger premises on Brunswick Street, Stockton from Station Road, Billingham in the 1960s.
Billingham Express was not connected with Billingham Press. I started at Billingham Press as an apprentice compositor 1960 and left in 1967 and never saw the Billingham Express printed there.
I kept a scrap book which included some cuttings of photos from the Billingham Express from the late 1950s to mid 1960’s and had thought about sending them to Picture Stockton for possible inclusion on this web site. Unfortunately, the printing technique used for photos at that time (a matrix of black and white dots), together with the passage of time, means that all my attempts to scan them and achieve a successful image have been unsuccessful.
I worked as a driver for 17 years from June 1968 to 1982 at Billingham Press and was able to travel to many cities and towns in England, Scotland, and Wales. Places I would never have seen otherwise, it was a great experience and I have many happy memories of people I met there and worked with. Tom Dodds was the owner and I believe his son Ian, who I had the pleasure of picking up from school and taking on many outings, is now in charge. I retired in 1982 and emigrated to Perth Western Australia in April 1986

My dad used to work there, as a type setter, in the 70’s
Was there once a weekly paper called ‘The Weekly News’ and was it printed by the Billingham Press?
I wonder if any past publications or photos are available from this newspaper…
