  1. Aye the railway lines still gracing the dockside up to Fyffe bananas, these early photographs are my era as a youngster walking with Mam and Dad along the dockside, out by the bus sheds, along the river to Preston Park and back home, calling at Paciito’s in Yarm Lane for an ice cream as a special treat.

  2. The Essoldo would have been in the middle on the left hand side towards the Shambles. The cinema near the junction with Yarm Road would have been the Odeon.

  3. In my days in Stockton to 1957 there were the 2 cinemas on the left. The Regal and then the Cinema.

  4. I spy… clockwise from the Shambles, the many Yards down to the riverside (Vane Arms, Black Lion, Clarence Court, William IV, Daltons, Black Bull), the Greyhound pub on the riverside, Doggarts with a flat roof behind , the Empire Theatre, the old Castle Brewery, the Metropole Hotel on the corner of Park Terrace, the Grey Horse Hotel on the corner of High St and Yarm Lane, the Cinema/Essoldo, the Red Lion on Ramsgate.
