  1. Bought the engagement ring there, albeit on the never never, but in those days you did not take possession until it was paid for. Leslie brown toy shop was a few doors down.

  2. What a pleasant surprise to find this photograph. I worked in Collingwoods for a short period in 1966. I worked with a great team comprising Mr Beckwith (manager) Stuart and a Mrs Wilkinson; the window dresser and the girl who sorted out the watch repairs are names I can’t recall but we really did have a good laugh at times. The wage was quite poor but the work was very interesting. I recall going down into the cellars and seeing signs of former human occupation in addition to a bricked up section of a wall that closed off a tunnel to the river. The assistant manager (sorry I can’t recall his name) was a very amusing guy and was so helpful when it came to teaching me about watches. So too was Stuart. Very happy times!

    • It truly is a surprise to see this, I also worked here for having left Teesside Goldsmiths as it closed down in 1983. My Manager was John Beckwith. The window looks exactly as I remember it.

      • I remember your auntie. Julie was hilarious. We would all laugh until the tears flowed. Is she still alive?

        • Hi Tony. My wife worked at Collingwoods in 1966 ish. She worked in the back. Her job was doing the guarantee and repairs. She was called Joan Brittain Sadly she died in 1998. A lovely lady.

      • Would this be June Lake wife of Cliff Lake? I knew them both quite well, Cliff drove a WW2 Jeep as his ‘every day’ car and was often seen driving it around the area. He was a motor vehicle fitter at ICI Billingham and sadly passed away in June 2005. A nice couple.

      • Hi Tom. What a great surprise to read your comment! I did play basketball at the Tech and I remember you clearly. We had some great times. Let me know how you are. I haven’t looked at this site for ages hence the delay in replying. Best wishes to you.
        Tony

  3. My parents bought me a signet ring for my 18th Birthday from Collingwoods, still wearing it 50 years later.
