A shop I remember well from my school years, I would pass daily as we went to Huttons Dairy next to the School arch, John was in my class but we also did a halfpenny dip, it was a board and you pushed out a foil if it was gold you won a very large bar of chocolate otherwise it was a small toffee bar. Pickersgill’s was one of those shops you could buy anything from a screw to pot of paint, many of the shops in Norton High Street were multi purpose and our parents could buy all they needed without going into town. Of course for a two penny bus ride you could go to the Market and save your bus fare with cheaper goods. Dad was always making or repairing things, we would walk down to Pickersgill’s and I remember the smell, Paraffin, Turpentine and we could get Linseed oil for my cricket bat. Life moves on, you can still get a lot of our needs in the High Street and I do, many do not because they say you cannot get parked? what happened to feet I ask.
I’d be interested to contact Norman Hill – we share a surname! Thanks Christopher Hill
