Stockton Wheelers Club Badge

t14083Can anyone tell me the relevance of the crown adorning the top of the Stockton Wheelers Cycling Club badge?

Any history regarding the club would be much appreciated too.

  1. Stockton Wheelers still going strong and celebrating our centenary year this year. We are having an exhibition in Stockton Library throughout June about the history of the club so if anyone has any old photos they would be willing to let us copy or borrow we would really appreciate it.

    • Hi Michelle. Do the Stockton Wheelers go back to 1878. The badge I have (a friends) is dated 1878. We reckon it was his Great Grandad or Grandad. Also have 2 North Yorkshire and South Durham Cycling Meet Badges around early 1900’s (a guess as I don’t have them here) I read Somewhere that the SCC split to become Richmond CC and SCC
Do you have any information or records that could help build the story of this piece. I understand that it was a rich mans sport back then and this is a 9ct gold Vice Captains badge.

  2. I haven’t a clue about the crown but I do have one of these badges in mint condition which I bought in the early eighties along with a key ring with the same emblem on. I also have one of the old cloth badges which was meant to be sewn on your top but I never got round to it. They pre-date the badges, probably from the fifties or sixties so they must be quite rare.

  3. It appears to me from an internet search that such use of the Royal Crown is subject to Copyright as I would have suspected. So whether the Wheelers have obtained such copyright or it’s use has been granted under Royal Charter is another matter. The Right Wing group Britain First were stopped from using the Crown in advertising but this was because it was contrary to Committee of Advertising Practice Code (CAP Code Edition 12). Read, http://mend.org.uk/britain-first-investigated-use-royal-crown/
    But also read http://www.royal.gov.uk/pdf/LCODec14/ROYAL%20ARMS%20BLUE%20BOOKLET20152.pdf

  4. I was unaware of a “Stockton Wheelers “cycling club.
When did it start and is it still in existence ?
I am a very keen cyclist and would love a badge or reproduction of it.
Please can any one assist re. above ?

    • It was old before the war I believe it was formed in 1916 though it could have been running in some form from much earlier.
My late Wife was a wheeler and they though nothing of riding to Whitby for a day out or Scarborough for a weekend, the week I met her they were off to the lakes asked if I wanted to go I declined gracefully, I liked motors on my bikes.
She had a Dawes lightweight a very expensive bike at the time and the Richmond Meet was a good day out to them.
Another wheeler Danny Cossavela would be up early on Sunday cycle to Thirsk and back before going on the Sunday run with the club, they were very keen on all things cycling in a time everyone cycled, my own Hercules Bike not being up to their standard of riding, hard work on wheels I called it.

    • To Douglas Fidler–Just look up the Stockton Wheelers cycling club on the internet. All the details you need to contact them etc.are on there.
