I lived in Tarring Street from 1934 until marriage in 1961. This property was not a shop in my time. The inhabitants were the Goring family: the father was, I believe, a labourer; the mother from the West Indies, then Hazel and Carl with whom I played. During the War they had one of those all-steel box air-raid shelters in the living room. Diagonally opposite was the fish shop. Maurice Frankland, later Councillor, lived down the street while Tom Sowler, electronics specialist and lecturer also Stockton historian lived next door to the fish shop.
I used to live in number 74 in the mid 70’s there where two guys running the shop then, Ali and another chap.. don’t recall his name… always very friendly and open all the time. There was a fish and chip shop over the road too.
Until 1961 this shop was owned by the father of Denis Thwaites who played football for Stockton Schoolboys and England in the 1959/60 season. Denis was snapped up by Birmingham City after leaving school (Holy Trinity). Birmingham were so keen to sign him that they bought a shop in the city for his father. Having played at Ayresome Park on one occasion for Birmingham he didn’t really fulfil his potential because his career was blighted by asthma and nerves.
Lived in Tarring Street at the same time as Thwaites ran the shop. Sadly Denis was killed along with his wife when they were killed on holiday on Tunisian beach in June 2015
