Durham Masonic Charity Medals dated 1899 and 1902

These are hallmarked silver masonic medals, they were in a display case that was presented by the members of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cycling Club meet at Richmond in 1908 to the meet’s president Mr C. McAdams, I don’t know if these were his medals as there was/is a number of cycling club badges from that era also inside the case.

  1. Hi Mike,

Christopher McAdams was initiated into Clarence Lodge, West Hartlepool on 6th Feb 1896 aged 22 and gave his residence as Bexhill-on-Sea, Manager Bicycle Depot. On each Census his address is local (M’bro 1881;1911;1921, Ormesby 1891, West Hartlepool 1901).

Hartlepool Daily Mail 29th July 1929 notes his death at the age of 55 and that he was also president of the Richmond Meet in 1914.

The 1908 Meet is mentioned in Northern Daily Mail of 9th June 1908. On 5th Sep 1908 the Stockton Herald, South Durham and Cleveland Advertiser reports
Motor Car Wrecked – End-on Collision With a Tram at Stockton – Occupants Thrown Out – Mr McAdams and the Chauffeur Badly Hurt. Later states he is suffering more from his injured leg.

    Keep smiling … Paul
