Brooke Bond National Travel Scholarships And Educational Award

Anyone remember these from the sixties? I found a signed copy of a book I won in April 1963 at Fairfield Junior Mixed School, Stockton. ‘What shall we draw’ by Adrian Hill.

  1. Is there any way of tracing other winners? My mum thinks she won this in 1961 for a story about the queen. Might have been a different year.. but she was at Stoneyburn Junior School

  2. I’ve just pulled a book from my bookshelf, cannot for the life of me remember where I acquired it, but inside is a sticker identical to the one shown above, with First Prize for Secondary Essay presented to David Titley, Parkfield C. Sec. School. March 1964.
It’s volume 1 of an anthology of science fiction. I probably found it in a second hand book shop years ago.
I was searching the web trying to find anything about the recipient, in case he wanted it back.
    Lovely old book.

  3. I’ve just taken from my bookshelf my signed copy of ‘What Shall we Draw”. I was talking about it to my granddaughter who was entering an art design competition. I have no memory of the picture that was submitted but I have just done a ‘Repair Shop’ on the dust cover. April 1964.

  4. This is identical to the certificate in the book I was awarded in 1964 as first prize for art, came completely out of the blue…still have the book, Treasure Island.

  5. Hello John:
I believe you attended Stockton Grammar School, class of 1963. If so, I was in the class of 1961, graduating in 1968.

I keep a Microsoft Excel workbook for each of the SGS enrollment years 1960 through 1967, although some of the years are not well populated.

If you’re interested in me sending you a copy of this workbook, please email pictures@stockton.gov.uk and they will provide you with my contact details.

    All the best,
Graham Pearson, SGS Class of 1961
