  1. I have just discovered that my great grandmother, Maria Wintle, lived/worked at this fish & chip shop in Stanley Street in 1921!

  2. Totally agree …fantastic photo. Remember using the fish/chip shop.
Lived at Nelson Terrace which is the crossing road in the picture.
    Do you have any more??

  4. I grew up in Stockton. l remember these streets. I remember the people. Many didn’t have televisions, telephones, fridge freezers, vacuum cleaners and, as for cars – forget it. But they had hope. They smiled, said hello, asked how you are, cared for each other.
I went to Newtown Junior School, failed the 11-plus, and went to Newham Grange Secondary School where the Headmaster became a seminal character in my development. At 21, I moved to London and met three Prime Ministers and countless show business celebrities. In my thirties, I won an honours degree in history and literature. Now, I am retired and write short stories.
But I never forget those early years. Dismal they may have been but if you’d scratched the surface you would have found lovely people. Many will have “shuffled off this mortal coil” but I will never forget those people who lived in the streets of Stockton.
