Photographs of market day in Stockton taken by my dad, Christopher Henry Deaton. Judging by the vehicles he went there somewhere between 1965 and 1967 (when he met my mum and never returned to Stockton).

My grandmother used to go to the shambles late at night on Saturdays to get the knock down meat for Sunday.

It was a bustling market which had an air of excitement, with stallholders shouting, selling their produce. People shopping, and stopping to have a “catch-up” chat with friends and acquaintances. Then a return bus journey home with full shopping bags. These were pre-supermarket days.
Not a plastic carrier bag in sight.
Correct – only wonderful brown paper bags…and free
So who was “The Banana King” of Stockton Market? 🤔
As a youngster who went shopping with his mum, when passing through the market in the late 1950s, I can still recall bins full of hens’ heads and guts…
Can’t remember the banana king but I do remember the guy who sharpened scissors on a mobile grinding wheel and the old guy who weighed customers on a set of old scales. Also bought three pigeons from the pet stall in the late 60’s
When very small and passing through the many market stalls, near “The Shambles” there were dozens of bloody chickens’ heads in bins…
That was when the market WAS a market and worth going to. I remember it well.
Your mother seems to have had a remarkable influence on your dad.
A great market in its day in a great High Street
She probably bought the meat off my relative – Sharps Butchers
Remember it well!!! Always packed out, and lots of stalls. Not now.
