Regarding the ‘great snows’ of 1947 I can vividly remember one particular day. I was at Richard Hind Junior School (aged 8) and something drastic happened with the heating boiler, so all pupils were sent home. The deal was that pupils had to walk home, and older ones were put in charge of those who were very young who lived on their route. I was instructed to hold the hand of a 5-year old and not to let go of it until I had delivered her to her home, and into the care of an adult. I can’t remember what was supposed to happen if nobody was ‘at home’!
Anyway, I can remember the pair of us – swagged up to the eyeballs against the bitter cold with probably nothing showing but our eyeballs – trudging doggedly along on pack-ice and snow to a large house near the bottom of Yarm Road, on the left and set back. Happily I was able to deliver the little girl into the hands of her mother before labouring on to my home in Regent Street – a total journey of probably well over a mile?. I don’t recall ANY children going astray during that exercise. Wellthentherenow! Just imagine a repeat of that situation nowadays??? Of course you can’t. How society has changed with regard to civilised behaviour, a sense of responsibility drilled into the young and safety in society in general.
