A train approaching Stockton Station in 1961.

This photograph shows a train approaching Stockton Station from the south with a load of girders from the Dorman Long Steelworks. Bishopton Lane signalbox can be seen on the left. The extensive Stockton North Yard continues beyond the station in the left background. Courtesy of David P Williams.

  1. This photo depicts a j39 being diverted from the down goods onto either the downs goods no.2 (known locally as the back road) to Stockton bank s.b which avoided any congestion around the station or the once busy yard, or directly into north yard; the directional signal no 39? is just out of sight behind the box. I started my railway career as box lad at Bishy Lane with signalmen Smith, Middlemist & Robson.
