The Wimpole c1983

t7507Two views of the Wimpole at 102 High Street, Stockton. Our records show that this building was once called the Shoulder of Mutton c1794 before becoming the Royal Exchange c1879. It was known as the Wimpole from 1961 until the early 1980s.

  1. Doing some research on behalf of a local history group, the Shoulder of Mutton is listed in the 1858 Post Office Directory but not in the 1851 Hagar Trade Directory. Every one of the other High Street pubs are mentioned in both. The only ‘extra’ High Street listed pub in 1851 is ‘The Rising Sun’. Could this pub have changed it’s name to ‘The Shoulder of Mutton’?

    • With reference to my previous comment there was a Shoulder of Mutton Yard in 1851, so there must have been a building of that name previously, perhaps a temporary name change to Rising Sun?

  2. Yes the wimpy bar was on the front I knew a lot of the girls who worked there, you could get egg and chips go 2 bob the pub was at the back good times
