Two views of the Wimpole at 102 High Street, Stockton. Our records show that this building was once called the Shoulder of Mutton c1794 before becoming the Royal Exchange c1879. It was known as the Wimpole from 1961 until the early 1980s.
Doing some research on behalf of a local history group, the Shoulder of Mutton is listed in the 1858 Post Office Directory but not in the 1851 Hagar Trade Directory. Every one of the other High Street pubs are mentioned in both. The only ‘extra’ High Street listed pub in 1851 is ‘The Rising Sun’. Could this pub have changed it’s name to ‘The Shoulder of Mutton’?
With reference to my previous comment there was a Shoulder of Mutton Yard in 1851, so there must have been a building of that name previously, perhaps a temporary name change to Rising Sun?

Thanks Stuart its good to know that my little grey cells haven’t deserted me entirely.
Was the Wimpole The Wimpey Bar by any chance?
My memory says that the pub was behind the burger bar. Can anyone confirm this?
Yes it was. You came in the Wimpy and walked through to the bar at the back.
I worked next door at the Essoldo bingo hall in 1971 called in for a drink when we finished.
Think it’s the George now.
Stylo shoes, I seem to recall that in my youth all shoes were 59/11!
I used to get all my shoes from Stylo in the early sixties they had all the styles of the time and at good prices.
