    • Hello, Bill (or Willie) was also my grandad. Served in WW1 in transport (he had a congenital hip problem so was considered “C 3” or such, medically). He was fined for losing a bucket, apparently!

Continued with Stockton omnibuses after the war and was secretary for the sports club for a number of years – I have the watch he was given on retiring from that. He died in 1978. I assume that you are from my fathers’ sisters side of the family. My name is William, too, still in Stockton.

        • Hello,

Willie had two much older brothers, though I don’t have details of their children. One served in the Boer War.

We are likely to be related, but from earlier generation – there are a number of male children who I have little detail of.

The Trenholms come from Welbury, originally, have a look out for Trenholm House next time you go down the A19, just after the Welbury turn-off.

      • What a lovely photograph. How smart everyone looked. Pity all has gone to pot. Scruffy Postmen, policemen, bus drivers etc. It’s time the word ‘Great’ was removed from the country name ‘Great Britain’ as the country has gone to the dogs.

        • I’ve just had another look at the photograph. I was surprised to see it did not have any ladies in it. When did ladies become Conductors, etc? During WW2 or after? I remember them as a boy in the 1950’s.

        • I think the Great Britain in the title refers to the British Isles as Greater Britain as in Greater Manchester and the Great in Great Britain means the whole area of the British Isles.

      • Hello Bill, I have just seen this today. I am indeed your cousin, my mam was Mary your dad’s youngest sister. I still live in Billingham, myself my sister and brother were at your dad’s funeral. I also kept in touch through Christmas cards with your mam.

        • Hello Lynn, Nice to hear from you. It is amazing how little we knew of my Dad’s side of the family. Mum always got your cards and displayed them. I do not know if you had seen Gazette notices, but Mum died of Covid in early 2021. She survived the first wave but the second time was more open and her carers passed it on. She was on the ball to the end and was living in the Fox Almshouses on Norton High Street. She would have been 100 y.o. next year.
Nice to hear from you. Take care. Bill

  1. I knew Norman well, and his wife Marjorie. I grew up with his sons Geoff and Michael. They lived in Palm Grove (Fairfield). Lovely family.

    • Great photo. I had a girl in my class at Norton school in the 1950’s called ‘Carol Trattles’. It’s an unusual name… any relation?. My maiden name was Miller.

    • I’m really sorry, but the only people I know are my grandad and Bill. The photograph had no information on it, so the only way you could find out is if you can identify him yourself.

      • Thank you, I have tried without success as I only knew him in his Up’s and on the photo he woul only be early 40’s.Unfortunately none of that generation are still alive, so am sorting through old photos to see if zig can find any of him as a young man. Linda

      • Hi Jan, Sorry to pick the trail up late. Do you know if Bill Trattles full name was William Thomas Trattles? If so, then his wife would have been Olive Jennings; marriage in 1938. If so then he was definitely related to my wife Joan nee Jennings.
