This image shows the Co-op on Norton Road next door to Chapmans garage, there is a sign on Chapmans pointing toward Bone Street where they had a garage workshop.
It was like the photo when we were lads Keith in the 40s & 50s, Stockton Grammar School across the road. Bill Godson had a sister Minnie Ford, Gordon Ford’s mother who lived in Byron Street.
I remember going in there many times as a boy with my mother. When paying they would ask mums COOP number. The garage next door was fantastic, they had everything. I had a puncture on my bike and they sold me a 6p puncture outfit and showed me how to fix the puncture. I was only about 7 or 8yrs old at the time.
Hi I went to Stockton grammar school which was over the road from your photograph. The school was shut in 1962 when I left and the Buffs club was built on the grounds. I can remember looking out of the class room windows with my class mates and trying to make contact with the girls working in the co-op. Happy days
Divi no’s …. by that’s taking us back some time. Coop No. 24 was in Richardson Road behind Richard Hind School. We lived in Hartburn Lane, so visiting the Coop was a regular trip. I got a penny for going, which is what I charged for doing any message, even when staying with Nan’s sister in Redcar, during most school holidays. Old money of course. Mother’s No. was 43187 and Nan’s was easy to remember – 25294
To the right of the photo is Arthur Volkes shop. Supposedly the first self service shop.
Arthur was a devout catholic and bought the statue of Madonna and child which sits outside the main entrance to St. Mary’s church which is further down the road.
I went to St Mary’s school with his son in the 50s until I went on to St. Bedes but only for a short time when I moved to South Yorkshire.
Bill Godson’s family lived in the flat above the Co-op Butchering Dept.
My Mate, Ike Godwin had his, Godwins Furntiture and Bed Shop next door before it burnt down a few years ago. Names pretty similar Anon.

I totally agree Anon. I remember the Ford’s of Byron Street well mate. The Grammer School and all the surrounding Streets.
Happy days indeed.
You would do Keith as we were lads that grew up in the area in the 40s & 50s.
According to my mum my great uncle Thomas Lenham lived above this shop.
