A photograph of the Chrome Works (BASF?) at Urlay Nook.

Sweethills was a tiny community dependant on nearby Haverton Hill. As Haverton Hill came into being during the steel boom of the late 19th and early 20th century, workers and their families travelled to Teesside for jobs. Among them was a family from Cheshire – The Gilberts.
We believe this photograph to be taken c1930.
These photographs were taken in the early 1960’s at Crosswaites foundry, Thornaby. They are the property of Peter Rowntree, the younger man featured in one of the photographs. Peter told me the older man standing with hands on hips is Teddy Douglas. I wonder if this workplace stirs any memories for visitors to the PictureStockton website

The photograph of the Devonshire Street/Yarm Road junction shows the recently built private flats on the site once occupied by a garage and saleroom. I am told some years ago it was also the site of a sack factory. Does anyone have any more information regarding this?

This photograph shows the place getters in 400 yards race at the Festival of Britain Sports meeting held at Stockton Race course in 1952. Benny Brown is in the middle of the runners and Benny Brown Senior is on the right side. Can anyone name the others? The 400 yards race was unusual as it was run in a straight line down the finishing straight at Stockton racecourse. Did anyone ever witness a 400 yards race in a straight line?

This shows a LMS, Stanier tank 2-6-4 locomotive number 42639, displaying express head code lamps hauling a lengthy train, with a mixture of BR MK1’s and LNER wooden bodied coaches, on the approach to Stockton Station from the south heading north, with Phoenix Sidings on the right and the CO-OP warehouse in the background. The date I am not sure but on research showed that the locomotive was built at Derby in 1938 and was allocated to 50A York 1960 and Darlington 51A 1963 and was scrapped in January 1965, so this photo may have taken during its time in the area.
Attached is a photo that I acquired from an exhibiton, unfortunately the photographer is unknown. Details courtesy of Bill Adams.
