‘William Whitelaw’, Eaglescliffe 1965

t13580This photograph shows class A4 number 60004, named ‘William Whitelaw’, at Eaglescliffe station after arriving with an RCTS excursion from Leeds to Tyneside on the 19th September 1965.  Local railway enthusiasts were out in force to join the passengers admiring the locomotive during its brief visit.  Engineering work had caused the train to be diverted from the main line and it travelled on to Darlington over the original Stockton and Darlington Railway route through Fighting Cocks to North Road.  After a works visit the excursion resumed its original schedule on to Newcastle.
The locomotive was named after the first chairman of the London and North Eastern Railway who held office from 1923 to 1938.  He was the grandfather of the politician with the same name who served in the Ted Heath and Margaret Thatcher governments.
