The Ship, Redmarshall
This is one of those posts that was lost when we moved to the new site.
It shows two photographs of The Ship on Church Lane, Redmarshall. It is said that the pub was originally built from the timber of ships that floundered off the River Tees, hence the name.
We have tried to recreate as many of the original comments as possible…
Bailey Street School Certificates
These swimming certificates were awarded to my uncle George Sunley when attended Bailey Street School 1931/32. George was born in Darlington but the family moved to Victoria Terrace Norton Road in the 1920’s. They owned a fish and chip shop with a dining room until 1938. George, an accomplished swimmer and cyclist apprenticed as a painter and decorator before joining the Royal Marines in 1940, he later took part in the action in Burma.

Stockton Races, 1970
The first photograph shows a horse called Mahalakshmi which ran in one of the supporting races that day. The jockey is a very young apprentice called Pat Eddery, he went on to be a racing superstar with over 4000 winners and was champion jockey many times.
The second photograph is of a horse called Noble Lad, his jockey is Ernie Johnson. Mr Johnson was also a top class jockey and the previous year had won the Epsom Derby riding Blakeney.
The third photograph shows a horse called Island Chief being led around the paddock, you can clearly see the race course stands in the background.
And finally a photograph of another well known jockey called Phillip Waldron seen walking out of the paddock in his white cap and purple/lilac colours.
