Stockton’s first motor fire engine Thomas can be seen here at the rear of Pumphries Sugar Mills in Thornaby, pumping out water after the area was flooded c1913.

Castle Theatre Workforce – 1908

t4537A photograph of the workforce that built the enormous Castle Theatre. The men completed the work on schedule for the opening in 1908. The theatres first play ‘The Lady of Lyons’ began its run on the 31st July.

Stockton Town House c1865

T136This is probably one of the oldest photographs we have of this historic civic building. The veranda was later replaced with a cast iron structure which has also been removed. Under this are the trestles for use in the market. The water pump seen in the foreground was part of the towns water supply c1865.

Frozen over on the Tees

t5223In 1795 the River Tees froze at Stockton for five weeks. When the ice eventually melted, flooding caused damage to several warehouses down by the river.

This photograph was taken when the River Tees froze again in the 1960s.

Steam-powered Paddleboat c1890s

t4563This steam-powered paddleboat would have run the river between Stockton and Middlesbrough, often ferrying workers from the two towns to the various industries either side of the river c1890s.

Stockton High Street c1890

s249A view of the east side of the south end of the High Street is The Royal Hotel, no. 78 (1740-1962), Stockton Town Hall (built 1735 extended 1744), Wilsons shop no. 75 and Goodsons shop, no. 47 (c1890-1899). An advertisement for Old Irish Whisky can be seen on the front part of a steam tram. This photograph was taken c1890.

Ye Old Green Bushes Inn

This building on Yarm Lane must have been demolished then re-built as it’s a three storey building now and has the same name, ‘Green Bushes’.

Opening of Victoria Bridge – 1887

Crowds gathered together on the 20th June 1887 to watch as his Worship J Richardson Esq. Mayor of Stockton officially opened the Victoria Bridge. This bridge replaced the earlier five-arched bridge. Permission was granted from Queen Victoria to use her name.
