A view of the Black Lion Hotel, Stockton High Street. Next door at number 65 is Wine and Spirit Merchants, W Graham and Son’s who may at one point have been owners of the Black Lion. In the foreground there looks to be a trailer, possibly horse-drawn selling hardware goods.

Stockton High Street c1900
A view of the south end of Stockton high street. Several prominent commercial signs for shops can be seen, including Hedley Swan and Co., A and G. Taylor, photographers, S.S.Eades piano and organ warehouse and The West End Art Tailoring Company, Scorers shop and The Unicorn Hotel. We believe advertisements for Neaves Food and Viking Milk are on the side of the tram seen travelling down the High Street, next to this is a cab shelter and several horse cabs. The wrought iron entrance canopy to the Borough Hall is just visible to the left.

Dodshon’s Fountain, Stockton
A photograph looking north, shows a view of Dodshon’s drinking fountain, complete with troughs around the sides for horses. The Town Hall is visible over the top of the Shambles and the west side of the High Street at the corner of Ramsgate (number 106 Robinson’s which was rebuilt in 1912). We believe this photograph may have been taken sometime between 1875 (the date on Dodshons fountain) and 1912 (when Robinson’s was rebuilt as Stewart’s).
