Stockton Parish Church and War Memorial c1955
This photograph taken from the High Street shows the Parish Church and War Memorial. The Parish Church was built from 1710-1712 and restored in 1893. The chancel was rebuilt in 1906 and the side chapel added in 1925. The War Memorial was erected in 1923.
Also seen in the photograph is a ‘Keep Left’ traffic bollard and a ‘No Waiting’ sign. The police station situated on Church Road (formerly Church Row) was purchased in 1872 and can just be seen behind the Church. We believe this photograph to be c1955.

Ashmores Braun Interdepartmental Football Team
I recently met up with Ray Thomas ex Thornaby and Ashmore’s employee and footballer who gave me this photograph of the Braun football team that won the Football competition. Most of these players also played in the Cricket team and the athletics team. Looking back over intervening fifty odd years I can not remember all the names of the team I hope some of our readers will be able to fill in the missing players.
The players I remember as follows back row: ??, ?? but was a great hockey player,Tony Abercombie (Manager) later a maths teacher at Frederick Natress High School. Jim Fryett Leader of the Stockton Morris dancers team, Ray Thomas Ashmore football team now in South Africa, Benny Brown Ex Stockton FC and CC, ??, ??
Front row: Geoff Smith Ashmore’s Football team, Jack Gilson Ashmore’s football team, Wilf Carr Preston CC and First class Hockey player, Peter Johnson Middlesbrough CC Opening bat and ex Boro juniors footballer. All these young men as they were then were good all rounders and slipped into the different sports with ease. It would be interesting to know how many are still with us and any details of the other players.

Heritage Stockton Website Goes Live!
The latest offering from Stockton Libraries and Heritage Service was unveiled today with the launch of the Heritage Stockton website. The site brings together articles and stories celebrating the Borough’s rich and diverse Heritage, from the early
settlements to the growth of the industries of the twentieth century, the development of the railways, the contributions to the sciences and the arts and the part we played in two world wars – and this is just the beginning. With historical maps and timelines you can see where and when it all happened…
Visit the site at http://www.heritage.stockton.gov.uk – we’d be glad to have your thoughts at pictures@stockton.gov.uk
The Family of Christopher Little
This photograph was taken at the time of the Boer War – probably 1901. It shows Lily Little (nee Crosby) with her children Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie), Thomas, George and baby Jessie – the family were living in Haverton Hill. It was sent to her husband, Christopher, who at that time was serving with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa on a 12 month short term enlistment. Tragically baby Jessie was to die before her father returned from the war.
You can read their story on the Heritage Stockton website
Thanks to Lily’s great grandson, also called Christopher Little, for sending us this photograph and for telling us the story.
