The ‘North End Steam Building Works’ on Norton Road, Stockton was once the premises of Stockton born architect and builder, Eugene E Clephan. The building next door was at one time Pharoahs Nightclub and also The Birches.
We believe these twin lodges date from the early 19th century, and were probably designed by the English architect, Benjamin Wyatt. The Golden Gates lodges are the entrance to Wynyard Hall and park. The Wellington Oberlisk can be seen in the distance on the first photograph between the trees.

Commencement of work began on Church Row, Stockton c1934 and arrangements were made to begin work at the other end of the scheme in early 1935 so that proper entry could be made to the Railway land. This photograph may possibly reflect this…
The Blacketts Building was a result of several extensions and improvements to a former warehouse. It was the largest emporium of its kind in the area. It was four stories high with a rear extension of 150 feet. In 1942 Blacketts took over the corner site belonging to the Cash Clothing Co, though this corner site was demolished September 1973 as seen in the photograph.
These two photographs are of Tees Yard in its prime. Sadly, it is almost gone.

A view of The Black Lion Hotel established c1740 on the south end of Stockton High Street. The Empire Theatre, a fine example of Edwardian architecture can just be seen to the right of the photograph.
Note the ‘Mixed Lounge’ sign outside William the Fourth Hotel and bus platform numbers 4,3 and 0.
Who are they? Can anyone tell us the names of these two members of Stockton Railway staff pictured here in the late 1980s.

At the junction of Bishopton Lane with the north end of the High Street sits a curved building known as Maxwell’s Corner. We believe it has been known as Maxwell’s Corner since ES Maxwell acquired the business of John Peckton, tailor, outfitter, hatter, hosier and glover in 1913. Date unknown.
This is one of those posts that was lost when we moved to the new site.
We believe this alleyway ran from Stockton High Street down to the quayside, though we unable to name it. Is that Head Wrightsons across the Tees?
We have tried to recreate as many of the original comments as possible…
A view of the east side of Stockton High Street and Clinkards Shoe Shop on the corner of Finkle Street. Wilson’s Department Store, Pickersgill and Sons and The Vane Arms can also be seen.
This watercolour of Wrens Brewery and Yarm Bridge was painted by R.S. Clark who I believe worked for Ashmore Benson Pease & Company in Stockton. The original which was purchased from the artist by my late father around 1950.

A woman observes a vessel moored at Corporation Wharf at Stockton-on-Tees. Unfortunately we can’t quite make out the vessels name, maybe someone can help?

These two photographs are of the Thornaby shed once known as 51L which is now long gone… It was said to be the very last shed built for steam in Britain at a huge cost, in 1958 terms of £1.25 million.
