The War Memorial

s699A view of Stockton War Memorial unveiling ceremony during the laying of the official wreaths. Many dignitaries, army personnel, schoolchildren and relatives of the fallen are in attendance.

The Globe Picture House, No.154 can be seen in the distance. The Globe was built c1914, demolished and rebuilt again in 1935. It was renamed the ABC in 1964, had its last performance in 1975. It became Mecca Bingo in 1981.

The photograph probably dates from the late 1920s/early 1930s…

Kirklevington Hall, 1989

t12772In 1881, the Richardson Family of Hartlepool commissoned the building of Kirklevington Hall, Kirklevington, Yarm as a rural retreat. Now a listed building, the hall remained a private residence until the 1980s when it was adapted to become lodgings for circuit judges on location in the northeast.

t12773Though, still privately owned it is now known as Judges Country House Hotel. During the Second World War it was apparently a secret command centre for the northeast, can anyone tell us if this is true?

The photographs date from November 1989.

Dodshon’s Fountain, Stockton

t12758

A photograph looking north, shows a view of Dodshon’s drinking fountain, complete with troughs around the sides for horses. The Town Hall is visible over the top of the Shambles and the west side of the High Street at the corner of Ramsgate (number 106 Robinson’s which was rebuilt in 1912). We believe this photograph may have been taken sometime between 1875 (the date on Dodshons fountain) and 1912 (when Robinson’s was rebuilt as Stewart’s).

Interior views of Sloans Billiard Hall

I thought these photographs may be of interest to those who knew Sloans Billiard Hall which was situated in the Empire Theatre. These three photos show the interior of Sloans, shame no tiles survived.

My late father in law Albert Hindmarsh regularly frequented Sloans in the late 50’s & early 60’s. He later became a regular doms man in the Talbot market days & Fridays. He was a welder and had several small engineering firms over the years. Does any one remember him?
