No. 15 Yarm High Street

t13097The rather crudely carved, well worn columns and pediment to the portico of this 18th century Merchants House, in contrast to the finer entrances to similar adjacent properties, seem to suggest that they were long ago salvaged from an earlier building. Or, that the facade has been updated (hence the rendered finish) at some stage of it’s history.

124 The High Street, Yarm

t13088I’m not sure whether this large building with it’s elegant arrangements of both bowed and venetian windows, situated on the approach to Yarm Bridge, was a Hotel, or the house of a local Doctor, but it bears the brass plaque showing ‘Night Bell’ on the pilasters to the front entrance.

Union Arms, Yarm High Street

t13018A view of the Union Arms, High Street, Yarm. Just visible above the modern sign, carved into the keystone of the coach-arch which once led to stabling at the rear, is the date 1762. The general facade to this building can also be seen to have an unusual decorative brick-pattern, by combining both red and beige stocks.

Stockton Castle

t12955The ruins of Stockton Castle I believe stood on land behind were the present Swallow Hotel is. The castle dates from the 1370s having been a Manor House earlier. It was demolished in the 1650s with the exception of the Barn which it was demolished in the 1860s.
