The Last Working Day, Stockton Railway Sheds c1959

t13289The last working day at Stockton railway sheds on the 31st May 1959. The gentleman to the right of the photograph (in the trilby and full length coat) is my late grandfather Tom Birtle. He worked at the Stockton sheds from 1920 until the final closure in 1959 he then spent the rest of his working life at the newly opened Thornaby sheds. For many years he and his family lived in the railway cottages at Norton.

Remembrance Sunday 2013, Billingham

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

From being remote from the annual Remembrance Sunday ceremony for many years, to being recognised and sponsored by Akzo Nobel of the Netherlands, formerly Imperial Chemicals Industries, the Billingham ICI War Memorial on Station Road has now become prominent in the day’s commemoration. Stockton Borough Council kindly had its green algae-ridden surface cleaned to reveal a clean finish not seen since its removal from Chilton House which was just outside the ICI West Gate. The monument which remembers one hundred and forty ICI employees who made the ultimate sacrifice during world war two, has attracted not only the now annual wreath of Akzo Nobel, but from private individuals with their own thoughts of those no longer with us.

St Cuthbert’s Senior Class 1, 1950

t13282Another photograph from St. Cuthbert’s R.C Mixed School photo album showing St. Cuthbert’s Senior Class 1, Stockton 1950. Unfortunately we don’t have any names, does anyone recognise them?

Courtesy of Tony Cooney who dropped the album off at Fairfield Library. He believes the head teacher, Mr Connors lived in the house at Jesmond Grove which he moved into last year.
