Pumphrey’s Jam and Icing Sugar Factory on Mandale Road, Thornaby. The tiled façade was based on the art deco style and the large windows were typical of new factories built between the wars. The factory specialised in lemon curd. Can anyone recall the sweet smell of lemons? Photograph taken 4th February 1986.

River Tees and Thornaby Place
This is one of those posts that was lost when we moved to the new site.
This photograph shows the River Tees with a wonderful view of the houses on Thornaby Place, the Bridge Hotel and the Cleveland (Clevo) Flour Mill.

We have tried to recreate as many of the original comments as possible…

Old Thornaby Pottery Works
Behind the Royal George Public House on Thornaby Road, stood Thornaby Pottery Works, also known as Stockton Pottery Works and Stafford Pottery on Sun Street. The pottery was one of the first on Teesside. It was established in 1825 by William Smith a local Stockton builder.
Photographs taken December 1991.
ICI Silo, Billingham c1990s
Stockton High Street c1870s
We think this photograph was taken in the pre-tram era, probably c1870s. We can see Wilson’s drapers (no.75), owned by Thomas Wilson who had recently dissolved his partnership in shipping with Appleton & Co to join his brother in the drapery business. Popperwell and Hudson dining rooms (no.71) and Gowlands Unicorn Hotel (no.72). The Unicorn Hotel was managed by Jane Gowland in 1871 and Philip Gowland from 1876. This Victorian building was still incomplete when it was demolished in 1970. What is the circular building in the middle of the photograph, is it the equivalent to the taxi office/rank of today?
