A view of Stockton High Street c1950s. On the right is the Royal Hotel, built c1740. It was very much altered from the original at the time of demolition. An RAC sign can be seen on the hotel wall. The Town Hall and beyond that, Robinson’s Tower is visible in the distance.

Wren’s Brewery
An early image of Wren’s Brewery giving a good view of the surrounding area. I am afraid the date of the image is not known. Prior to the building being purchased by my family in the early 20th century it had been used as a paper mill. In later years the business was ran by my father and his uncle, the brewing of vinegar continued there until 1971.

Locomotion – 1925 Centenary Cavalcade
This photograph of a Locomotion hauling a train of Chaldron Wagons was taken in September 1925 when the train was part of the Stockton and Darlington Railway Centenary Cavalcade, the location is unknown but is probably on the section of line between Eaglescliffe and Dinsdale.
The original photograph in my collection is on very old photographic paper and not in very good condition but there is a bit of a mystery surrounding the photograph – on the left hand side of the print can be seen parallel lines which do not appear to be damage to the photograph and look to be high voltage power cables as seen on modern day pylons, yet an Internet search reveals that pylons were first introduced in Scotland in 1927/28.
I’ve been unable to find any maps of the area specific to 1925, can anybody help with identification of the location and possibly an explanation of the parallel lines…

Elton Hall, Elton – 1985
Elton Hall, Elton is about 5 miles west of Stockton. We believe the house to have been demolished c1910 and rebuilt on the same site between 1913-1914. It is reported that the poet, William Wordsworth visited Elton Hall, or more specifically the summer house whilst courting!
Photograph taken August 1985.
Mandale Road, Thornaby c1905
A photograph taken c1905 of Mandale Road looking towards the Town Hall. On the corner of Mandale Road and George Street was Scott and Sons, a newsagents and stationers. Next to this is the original Five Lamps. Across the road we can identify a milliners possibly owned by Mrs Jane Laing and a sign for what looks like a Conservative Club…

Rimswell Manor House
Rimswell Manor House was built in the Victorian style and stood in 62 acres of grounds. It was the residence of William Anderson, Justice of Peace. William Anderson along with 2 others helped to finance the original Five Lamps in Thornaby. We think the house was demolished in the late 1950s, though the original Gatehouse still stands. We also think the area on which the house and grounds stood is now the Rimswell Pub and houses on Manor Place, just off Bishopton Road West. Does anyone remember this house?

This 3 storey building has stood on the corner of the High Street since c1834, it wasn’t until 1890 that the building was reported to have had glass windows fitted. Throughout the years there has been many different types of businesses from Board and Lodgings to Hosiers and Grocers to Printers. Jackson the tailors shown in this photograph occupied the building from 1914 to 1971.
