I recently came across a scrapbook my nana and grandad Ernest (Ernie) and Margaret (Madge) Temple had/were given from the 1960s when he was the Mayor of Stockton. The scrapbook contains lots of photos from dinners, charity events, meet and greets as well as invites. Here are just a few…

Stockton launched its Armed Forces Week celebrations with a traditional flag raising ceremony outside of the Municipal Buildings on Monday 19 June in a short service led by the Mayor Of Stockton Councillor Jim Beall.
Serving members of the Armed Forces were on parade as were veterans and standard bearers from all branches of the armed forces, reserve and territorial members too with the mayor being joined on the dais by Neil Schneider DL, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of County Durham and The Countess Peel DL, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire with both Glenn Eastick the Mayor of Thornaby and his wife Tracy the Mayoress, Matt Vickers MP and council officers also in attendance. Making sure that it all ran with military precision was Parade Marshall Mark Thompson, himself a former soldier in the Parachute Regiment.

I recently came across a Tyne Tees TV recording I made of a service in 1982 in Stockton Parish Church, led by Revd David Whittington, then vicar of Stockton. It was broadcast nationally to celebrate 75 years of the Scout movement and I sang in the choir with my daughter. There are so many local faces from 41 years ago. Who can you spot?
Sadly I can’t remember the day. My dad is the smart man standing to the left of the impromptu flag pole. I am the little girl at the very bottom of the photograph.
A Grangefield Girls’ Grammar school day coach outing? It seems to be the whole of the third year, probably 1962, but where were we going? Any ideas welcome. The second photograph was taken on another occasion as the clothes are different but I have no further details. How the coaches have changed!
A photograph of some of Robert Atkinson 5th Formers, around 1972/3. Back row left to right, Dave Elliot, Shaun Gallagher, Ian Spence, front row, Kenny Daniels, Stuart Graham, Alan Walton, Dennis Hardy, Nigel Richardson.
I believe these men are tamping sand around a mould ready for casting at Head Wrightsons. My father-in-law Thomas William Heslop is second from the left on the back row.
Sad to hear of the recent passing of Stockton DJ Ian Young (Harry) pictured right. I first met him in the mid 1970’s when he was the resident DJ in the Electric Onion night club on Bridge Road, Stockton and bumped into him at many 21st Birthdays, Engagements, and Wedding parties over the years.
The other guy was also a local DJ Tony Wright (Capri) who worked in Bentley’s nightclub in the late 1970’s, Tony sadly passed away in 2019. RIP both.

Following on from the recent post – ‘Ready for a new school’, Grangefield uniform, I have seen on this site the ‘boys’ rules but I think the girls rules are even more draconian. In Section One Rule H ‘No girl may ride a cycle in the school Grounds’ is bizarre but my favourite has to be Section 2 Line F ‘Girls may not eat in the street to and from school’.

We had many many happy years learning Ballroom and Latin American dancing here. The dancing school opened in March, 1960 in St. Joseph’s School Hall in Ragpath Lane, Norton. The teachers were Brian Allen, Veronica O’Neil, and Joyce Roberts. Colin Allen, Brian’s twin brother had a huge input also. It moved to Maritime Road and closed in July, 1985.

This photograph was taken by Thirlwells photographers who had studios in Stockton, Darlington, Guisborough and Spennymoor. The wording Chirlwell on the photograph must mean Thirlwell… I have no idea who the people are or which studio it was taken in. When I copied it I put Watson on the file name. I do have a Watson Swales on my family tree, he was born in Glaisdale in 1826 and died in Whitby in 1891, but I have no idea if that’s Watson Swales or not. Can anyone show a light on the photograph?
Does anyone, boys or girls, have memories to share of the strict school uniform at Grangefield? I remember, for the girls, having both indoor and outdoor shoes. Skirts had to touch the ground when kneeling down. Very different from the school uniform of today.
