Motorcycling Friends, St. Paul’s Church, Thornaby c1968

t14248This photograph was taken on the 24 August 1968 at the rear of St. Pauls Church on Thornaby Road, it is the wedding of my brother Geoff and Anne Retallack.

Motorcycling friends (L-R): Alan Handley, who was tickling Brian Coleman, Tom Grainger, Tommy Wallace, Geoff Coleman, John Jones, Rob Wright, ??, Franny Bamborough, Colin Bamborough, Alan Robinson and myself Bruce Coleman. One of the group members is missing – he is Derek Holland who had to work that day. The unbelievable freedom that our motorcycles gave us was really terrific, evening trips to Durham ice rink or the Ponderosa Cafe’ in Redcar, weekend jaunts to Whitby and Scarborough as well as Whitley Bay, race meetings at Croft and Olivers Mount, constant tinkering and polishing, dismantling and rebuilding, anybody who rode a motorcycle in those days will know what I am talking about. Other motorcyclist from that era were Pete and Colin Sample, Eric Handley, Kevin Groves and Micky Twizell, who all at some time rode with us.

Group photograph, Tilery Rec?

t14244I think this photograph was taken on Tilery Rec, but I could be wrong…

It shows my father Ernie Fish, the little boy 3rd from the left on the front row. His older cousin Harry Paul has his arms around him. My father looks like he has a skirt on but they were a very baggy shorts!  His brother Wilson Fish is the boy kneeling in the front row, 1st on the right.

My father was born in Swainby Road. They lived at number 67 with my grandparents Martha and Wilson Fish who moved to road when they wed in 1925. They had previously lived in Thistle Green/Housewife Lane and Bolton House Yard areas of Stockton which was demolished c1925.  My grandparents moved out of Swainby Road in the 1950s. Can anyone put names to the other boys in the photograph?

Wedding Photograph of Norton Fish and Chip Shop Family, 1948

t14243This photograph shows what was possible at a time of severe rationing around 1948.

It shows some of the people at the wedding of Peggy Davidson, whose mother owned the Regent Fish and Chip shop across from the Modern.

Peggy is at the centre and marrying Wilf. Next to Peggy, is her father Ernie Davidson, a really nice chap. Then there is his daughter, Joyce. Sitting down is Jessie Peacock, a real live wire, and the daughter of Mary Peacock, who looked after and lived over the Regent. I (Fred Starr) am standing next to Jessie.

On the other side of Wilf stands a  delightful looking Jean Peacock, holding a bunch of flowers. I am not sure about the group next to Jean , but I am fairly certain that the little boy is Reg Davidson, and I suspect that it is his mother and father behind him.

My mother, Frances McGlade, made the page boys outfits for Reg and myself,  and almost certainly made the flowered dresses and might also have done the other ones too. I guess this is one reason why I am in the photograph.

Ronald Scott was a talented song and dance man who left Barnard Street, Thornaby to travel the world as an entertainer. He even recreated a Thornaby pub in Bangkok called the ‘Yard of Ale’ where he performed for years.

A much younger Ronald can be seen on the photograph entitled ‘‘Victory’s Children, Barnard Street, Thornaby c1945‘.
