Stockton Parade ‘Mannequins’ at Hill Carters c1933

t14830My mother Margaret Taylor was a model for D Hill, Carter & Co., in both photographs she is wearing a Wedding dress from the new Autumn bridal collection at a fashion parade at Hill Carters on Stockton High Street on October 12, 1933.

In the 1940s, then Margaret Oliver, she worked in Audrey’s dress shop which was opposite the Globe Cinema before moving to work for many years in Robinsons on the fabric counter.

1st Wolviston Boy Scouts c1956

t14832This is a photograph of The 1st Wolviston Boy Scout Troup heading out to our annual weeks camp, I think it was to Staindrop in 1956, I could be wrong as it was a long time ago. Our Skipper or General Scout Master was Johnny Antrobus from Billingham, I look back and realise how much time and effort he put in to Scouting with no real recognition of his good work. He ran our troop with lots of fun and discipline, it was somewhere we all looked forward to going to every Friday Night. I believe Skip and Scouting gave me a good start in life. Some of our members I am still in touch with to this day.

Some of the names I can remember in this photograph are Alan Bell, George Caldwell, Oswald Dodds, Keith Humble, Brian Humble, Richard Nelson, Keith Nesbitt, Keith Parnaby, Derek Redfearn, Graham Smith, Dave Tatchell, Billy Woodall, Alan Weedall, George Walker, Dennis Young and the Pinder brothers whose first names I can’t remember.

Madge Loughran of Airton Street, Stockton

The first photograph is of my mother aged 6, she was one of three daughters who lived in Airton Street, Stockton. She was called Margaret (Madge) Loughran.

The second photograph was taken in 1929 and shows my mother on her Wedding Day stood in the doorway of St. Mary’s RC Church at ‘Tilery’. Margaret May Loughran became Margaret May Gilhooley.

Billingham Express c1968

I’ve just come across a copy of the Billingham Express from 1968. It was full of interesting stories from the area and there was even a photograph of a couple getting married. To my utter amazement I used to work with the chap at Harkers Engineering. How many other people can pick up a forty eight year old newspaper and know somebody inside? Does anyone remember how long this publication ran for?

Kingsport Close, Portrack, Back Garden c1972

t14825The photograph is taken from 17 Kingsport Close and shows the back garden in reasonable condition with a lawn and some small ornamental bushes. I had also attempted to grow a Mountain Ash. Unfortunately it was too near the house, so I dug it up not long after this picture was taken.

One can see signs of the Council beginning to upgrade the estate, when first built around 1954 the fences were made of simple concrete posts and strands of steel fencing wire. Today the gardens are completely enclosed giving much more privacy.

Richard Hind Football Team c1960s

t14823A photograph showing the Football Team at Richard Hind School, I guess in the early 60’s. My brother Malcolm (known by everyone as Mick) is in the photograph and played in goal for the team. I haven’t a clue who the rest of the boys are. Maybe someone else can help.

Billingham Council Offices c1930

t14821Billingham Urban District Council was formed in 1923 and existed until absorbed into Teesside in 1968, initially the main administrative centre was Haverton Hill and this is where the BUDC offices were built, this image shows the office block to be near completion but not yet in use, also in Haverton Hill were the Ministry Of Pensions and the Welfare Clinic, the former was in a converted church opposite the BUDC offices and the latter was an annexe to the Methodist Church, people of a certain age will probably remember visiting the clinic to collect such things as “National Dried Milk”, extremely tasty concentrated orange juice and equally tasty malt, unfortunately we were also supplied with the somewhat less tasty cod liver oil, in later years the cod liver oil was mixed with the malt so there was no escaping it.

This image was supplied by Colin Hatton, I did know the Ministry of Pensions were in Haverton Hill but It was Colin who told me they were in a converted church, I vividly remember the long walk from the North side of Billingham to the Welfare Clinic and calling in to my Grandmothers house in Cleveland Avenue Haverton on the way past, then visiting my other Grandmother in Cornwall Crescent Billingham on the way back.

Class Photograph, Bede Hall Billingham Campus c1966

t14822When you look through the pages of Picture Stockton Archive there is very little about my old school, Bede Hall Billingham Campus. In an attempt to remedy this I have dug out an old class photograph from March 1966. Now where did that 50 years go? I am but a callow youth of 15.

There are five of the young ladies whose names have slipped from my mind. Hopefully someone can fill in the gaps.

The names from left to right, starting with the back row, are a follows… Terry Reeves, Chris Clough , Alan Storr , Les Spedding , Pete Thomas , Chris Maughn , John Elliott , Paul Overton , Chris Hardy , Ken Keating , Eric Doyle and Roger Crowe.

The middle row again from left to right… Stella Rodgers, ??, Gillian Peevoir, Martin Birtle, Erik Brown, Barbara Nelson, ?? and Pauline Lapping.

And finally the front row from left to right… ??,  Ann Buck, Carole Smith, Pat Rennison, Mike Huckins, Dorothy Burnicle, ??, ?? and Pamela Mahon.

We all went our separate ways and with one or two exceptions I’ve never seen them again.

Lecturers from Stockton and Billingham Technical College

t14817Stockton and Billingham Technical College, Engineering Department, Oxbridge Avenue, Stockton-on-Tees. If you worked at any of the Engineering Companies in Stockton you would have gone to the local Technical College for day release/night classes and probably had contact with some of the lecturers in this photograph.

The photograph shows four lecturers from the college who are L/R: John (Jack) Southern who took Mechanics, Harry Cardwell the college principal at Stockton, Tom Sowler who took Electrics, Joe Harle who took Maths
