The Royal Hotel (1740 – 1962) at number 78, Stockton High street. This photograph shows the ground floor occupied by shops; Millers Candy Stores, Maison de Chapeaux and C. W. Laws Drapers.
We believe this photograph to be c1920.
Taken in June 1992, the shops and pubs from left to right are; The Mall night-club, Post Office, former branch of Barclays Bank, Children’s Society charity shop, Leslie Browns toy shop, Smith’s 4 hour cleaning, Zarah’s designer clothing, Track’s record shop, Down Town pub, Sue Ryder charity shop, Oxfam chartity shop and Noble Amusement’s. I’m amazed that over the 20 years, this side of the High Street as changed so much, in the way of the shops, pubs etc.

I recently commented on the Dutch Barn style houses that are listed as being in Fairfield. Myself and others have commented that we think they are actually the houses on Durham Road, Stockton.
These photographs are of one of the houses on Durham Road, it would be nice to compare these photographs to the photographs of the houses being built.
