We believe these ladders led down to the jail cells located beneath the Town Hall. Apparently the cells were only five feet tall and offenders were passed into the cells through what was then a hatchway in the pavement outside. Can anyone confirm this?

Harry Greener’s Class 1968/69, Billingham Church of England School
I recently found this photo along with some of my father’s documents, which shows the class of that year, for which my father was my teacher as well! (I’ve read some of the earlier comments about him – he seems to have been quite popular!)

I can only identify a few names…

Blencathra Close Street Party, June 2022
We held a street party on Friday 3rd June on Blencathra Close, Thornaby. We had activities including a bouncy castle, music, paddling pool, trampoline, quiz, photo prop, pin the crown on the queen, a royal scavenger hunt, buffet lunch and an evening BBQ. We partied from 12pm to 8pm and enjoyed the most glorious weather. It was great to see the neighbourhood in such great spirits, taking the time to enjoy the celebrations. We decorated with bunting and flags and made fantastic use of the party pack provided by Stockton Borough Council.

Pre War School Report, St. John’s School
I’ve recently been looking through some family papers and I’ve found a school report going back to the summer term of 1939. It’s from St John’s School, Billingham and concerns my late mum Doreen Birtle nee Wright. She was doing well as her class position of 3rd out of 43 indicates.
Strangely the only subject in which she topped the class was in Nature Studies. Well the years passed and in 2001 Doreen was very proud when her granddaughter was awarded a first class degree from Cambridge University. In Natural Sciences of course.
