First Electric Tram to reach Norton

t12775The tram is packed out and specially decorated for the opening day of the Electric tramway, this being the 16th July 1898. Believed to be the first electric tram to reach Norton Green on the opening day of the new electric system. The Hamiltonian Inn is on the right, the licensee at the time was Ralph Storey. (Could this be the present day Unicorn Hotel).? I imagine this would have been a special day for these passengers.

Number 12 Harland Place, Norton

t12782A photograph of 12, Harland Place, High Street, Norton. It was once a former Motor-vehicle garage (at rear), Auction Rooms and Estate Agents, Antiques shop and Tearoom, it is now a successful restaurant and bar. These properties had long gardens to the rear which were cut across by the new Stockton-Billingham (A19) link road early in the 20th century. The wall to the stabling facilities to the original ‘Red Lion’ pub, can just be seen on the left. These became a concert-room / function room annexe to the pub facility. The Catherine Duell, chiropodists practice, next door, still has a very attractive mosaic inlay to the shop entry recess, dating from when the premises was a high-quality ladies millinery shop for Norton.
