Sober Hall Farm House c1979

t12768This photograph taken in October 1979 shows Sober Hall Farm House, Raydale Beck, Ingleby Barwick. This farm complex, dates from the late 18th/early 19th century, it once included a granary, barn, horse engine, windmill and byres. Is this the same building built by Sir William Turner of Kirkleatham? It was restored c2001 into a private residence.

Yarm Fair – Travellers Arrival

t12790Yarm High Street in October showing the ‘Travellers’ caravans parked-up and organised just 30 minutes after the High Street is closed to traffic, all being situated at the quieter north-end. In the distance at the south-end, the ‘show-men’ are busy erecting the huge mechanical ‘rides’ and the gaming ‘stalls’, by working late into the night, the fair will be ready to open the next evening.

Stockton High Street c1900

t12797A view of the south end of Stockton high street. Several prominent commercial signs for shops can be seen, including Hedley Swan and Co., A and G. Taylor, photographers, S.S.Eades piano and organ warehouse and The West End Art Tailoring Company, Scorers shop and The Unicorn Hotel. We believe advertisements for Neaves Food and Viking Milk are on the side of the tram seen travelling down the High Street, next to this is a cab shelter and several horse cabs. The wrought iron entrance canopy to the Borough Hall is just visible to the left.

Roseworth Junior Class 4C c1961/62

t12804This old school photograph shows the Roseworth Junior Class, 4C. I think it may have been taken about 1991/1962.

Our classroom was in the ‘Black Huts’ of Kiora Hall, it was an old ‘Prisoner of War’ compound. Not many of us made it to grammar school but what fun we had in those days. The form teacher was Mr Crab and the headmaster was Mr Knowles.  I wondered if any of the lads and lasses were still around, I would love to hear from you…

River Tees Concrete Tank Trap c1985

t12803As a few people have remarked, the banks of the River Tees were well fortified aginst a potential German attack. This photograph from around 1985 shows the anti-tank ditch lying between the two footpaths. In the foreground, the broken remains of anti-tank concrete obstacles can be seen. It is also worth noting that this uncared for, derilict site, became a haven for wild plants. A genuine nature reserve, but the pools of water also made it a haven for midgies in the late summer!

Green Bushes Public House, Stockton – 2011

t12779Photographs of Green Bushes Public House on the Yarm Lane and Brunswick Street corner.
A Bass Breweries public house, built on the site of the original ‘pub’ that was converted from a terraced house. These houses had a small plot of garden at the front, over which the adjacent houses were extended to form shop units. The roofline of the original terrace can still be seen. Obviously, great efforts were taken by the architects in the 1930’s to design a ‘townhouse’ style building that reflected original 18th century Georgian properties on the High Street and Church Row, complete with an attractive shell-canopied ‘portico’ to the side entrance on Brunswick Street.

t12780Thankfully the original garden space was retained. The Burdon’s music shop premises (which was open until at least the 1970’s) , just  shown on the archived photograph, can be now seen as a motorcycle showroom.
