Bickersteth Street Celebrations

t13372My family lived at 51 Bickersteth Street and this was found amongst family photographs. I have done some research and have some names of the families living at numbers 42 – 53.  The street are gathered together for some kind of Street celebration, can anyone shed any light?

Norton East Signal Box?

t13369As a bit of background the gentleman in the photograph is my Great Great Grandfather Robert Dowson. We understand he was a Master Signalman at Nunthorpe before moving to the Norton area, we have photographs of the full family in the rear yard of a property in Trent Street and we know the family was living in Lax Terrace (now part of Norton Road) in 1911. We understand the photo is NOT Nunthorpe due to the fact Nunthorpe has a “ships wheel” to raise and lower the gates. Robert died in 1948 at the age of 93 so I’m assuming he saw a lot of changes to both the area and to the Railways, also if anybody would be interested I have a draft letter in an old ledger book from his son (My Great Grandfather) to a friend in South Africa which mentions the electrification of the mineral line from Shildon to Port Clarance, I guess this was around 1913, and the tunnel that was being built under Norton Road so as not to disrupt traffic, I’m trying to find when this was.

Norton Cricket Club ‘Jazz Hats’ c1950/51

t13343 t13344 t13345A photograph of Norton Cricket Club, I am not certain which year but strongly suspect it is 1950/1951. It could be called the ”Jazz Hats” team as no less than six of the players are wearing their Norton caps. The club colours for Norton were cream, maroon and chocolate. I wonder if modern day Norton players still wear the famous club colours?

Back row (left to right): Haig Williamson, Tom Birtle, Colin Atkinson, Mick Tait, Ken Williamson, and Jackie Fox (wicket keeper) Front row (left to right): Harry Thompson, David Walford, David Townsend, Jim Grigor and Ted Waller.

These photographs of the Norton cap were owned by my late father Tom Birtle and still in immaculate condition after all these years.
