A Floating Dock during construction c.1938 at Haverton Hill. A Floating Dock would be taken out to sea. It would lower its base to allow ships to float over it and then rise up again lifting the ship with it. Repairs to the vessels could then take place as if they were at a dry dock.

Tees Towing Company as featured in the Tees Conservancy Commissioners Handbook. One of many operators along the Tees, the tugs in service provided much needed assistance for large vessels coming into ports. When tides or winds were not on side the steam tugs would give the extra power to keep the ships moving.

Recollections of a River
The Victorian attitude was to cut the loops off! This 1889 plan shows the new course of the river after the cuts as well as where the old loops used to be. Such loops are known as ‘meanders’. These meanders were difficult to navigate, and sail, horses and even manpower were some times needed for the larger ships to get round them.
